The idea for 'The Shed Show' came about 20 years ago, but the seed was sown long before that. I remember my Dad turning our shed into a ‘hangout,' for me and my mates when I was a rebellious teenager.
My Mum told me years later; it was so they knew where I was. Smart man my Dad, maybe it happened because his Dad did the same for him.
Sadly, I never got to ask him. He died soon after, but the shed became a refuge and a meeting place for me and my buddies as we searched our life’s path, some even lived in that shed from time to time.
I did the same for my kids, and now my son continues the tradition with his very own shed.
The shed not only brings people together, but they are also a place for contemplation and meditation. The shed has a culture and a spirit where everyone is equal, a space of self-expression, filled with knowledge and problem-solving skills. Sheds are a sneak peek into people’s lives, which is why when recently sitting talking with mates about our love of the ‘shed’, I decided to revisit the concept of ’The Shed Show'.
I’m lucky enough to have a friend working in the media industry. A multi-talented individual who can fly a camera, 'smash it' with editing, he also manages the website and social media. I ran 'The Shed Show' idea passed him, he then turns up at my place to shoot the ‘trailer’, using my shed ('Shed HQ') and a few buddies sheds nearby (nice sheds)...and I left him to weave his ‘magic'.
So, we had a finished ’trailer’, and I pondered what to do with it. Would a shed company ‘dig it’ and help fund a pilot program that we could take to a network? How do these people in the 'TV world' operate?
To gauge interest, I sent it to Channel 31 Melbourne. Soon after, I received a call from a beautiful lady who said, “I love the concept… can you be on the air by September?”
I said, “no worries,” as you do. That was a month ago.
Since then, PK and I have been travelling around meeting extraordinary people, who have invited us into their sheds and lives.
We greatly appreciate the confidence shown by Channel 31. We are currently producing the episodes ‘off our own bat’, with fingers crossed someone in business will see the benefit of hitching their brand to ‘The Shed Show’.
The public response has been overwhelming through social media, and the feedback very positive when we visit people's sheds.
I hope we can continue to bring you 'The Shed Show' because I love showing you the characters and imagination found only in the humble backyard shed.
Cheers - Whiskas.
